Troubleshooting ControlUp Advanced Session Triggers

Posted on March 5, 2024

A user is looking for a way to have a Citrix virtual machine with ControlUp Agent detect if the launching machine does not have ControlUp Remote DX installed. They set up an Advanced Session Trigger with a filter for the Remote DX version, but it did not trigger as expected. Others suggest using the User Logged On trigger instead and making sure all machines are on the latest version of Remote DX. One user is testing this and will update later. However, there may be an issue with the Advanced Session Trigger not recognizing the Account Name and may need to be addressed with ControlUp support.

Read the entire ‘Troubleshooting ControlUp Advanced Session Triggers’ thread below:

Hi All, I am looking to see if there’s a way for a Citrix Virtual Machine with ControlUp Agent installed on it to detect that the machine that launched the session does not have ControlUp Remote DX installed on it.

you set an alert on that column to let you not is blank on not the version that you want deployed

I’ll try that. Thank you.

In ControlUp Management Console, Im adding an Advanced Session Trigger that is targeting the Remote DX Version and I’m not receiving the notice like I expected. I have it looking at a blank value in order to look for a machine with no version installed. If I set the value to 2.* and try logging in to a machine with version 2 of Remote DX installed it will send the warning. How would I have it look for no version of Remote DX installed?

put in it not equal to the versions u have deployed

u can’t leave it blank

u will always want to make sure they are on the latest version, so when u deploy an new updated version just change the alert so u know all devices get the upgrade that way u will also catch any that don’t have it installed

Ive set two trigger filters and havent gotten it to trigger properly. One is set for Remote DX version is not 2.4.1.2 and the other is Remote DX Version is not 2.. Just to test the other criteria I set it to Remote DX Version is 2. and I did get it to trigger properly.

put a * in at the start and at the end

i can test this later for u see if there anything funcky about it

I did some more testing and I received the trigger once. Other tests I either didnt receive the trigger or the trigger ran but didnt recognize a connected user so the triggers Account Name was blank. It isnt quite right yet. Could you let me know how your test goes please.

the trigger will only fire when the value changes did you try logging on and off sessions

Yes I ended and restarted the session between tests.

will try in abit

I wanted to provide an update. I changed from an Advanced Session trigger to a User Logged On trigger. It will trigger now but It is running the Follow-Up Action twice. Also I am seeing its Incidents run on a few machines with no User Logged on or at last no detected User Name

sorry didn’t get a chance to test was abit crazy, but i will get setting up some automation and triggers tomorrow on a site and will test this

its something i want to do on the site as well so will just not got around to it

just put in an advanced trigger on session and getting tones of alerts (used a random version mumber to cause it to triggers)

When doing your testing are you able to use a Citrix AppLayer image to see if theres a quirk with it thats causing the double trigger?

don’t have applayering

but that should not make a difference a values in ControlUp. on a site note are u using applyer on ur end points?

Our virtual machine environment is using Citrix AppLayering. The laptops connecting to the virtual machines would have the same setup as connecting to a more traditional Citrix virtual machine.

But remotedx ins installed on the endpoints so not sure why applyering is relavant

When a colleague logs into an applayering VM it loads the OS then any applayers (applications) they are assigned to. My thought was if it was seeing that as two log ins.

RemoteDX is a plugin to the Citrix receiver and sends data from the end point to the citrix decktop that he logs on to, if the portal is a publish application then yes would be two logs if he doing it with the original sesion then shuld be only one

I was revisiting the Advanced Session Trigger and would you have an idea on what would cause it to not recognize the Account Name?

only seen that myself when the monitors were under resourced

if contiinues u would need to chat with cu support
