Pinging Google and its potential effects on network latency.

Posted on August 20, 2024

The group discusses pinging Google and other options for avoiding latency issues. Some are concerned about Google blacklisting companies for pinging too much, while others defend using ping as a useful feature but acknowledge the need to disable it in certain security situations. OpenDNS and Cloudflare are suggested as alternative options to avoid pinging Google. The group has a meeting with Cloudflare scheduled.

Regarding network latency what are other companies doing the ping to Google ?

We have a ping to Google as well as a ping to our DNS server and Core application Web server.

and how many devices do you have ?

I found articles that says google doesnt want to do this anymore

we don’t use Edge DX very much. Google can go pound sand. lol Do they ever ask us what we want? :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:

Wonder if CU has a deal with Google to ping them ? @member @member

We saw companies get blacklisted due to pings to google

I don’t think we do. Have you heard of this being a problem @member

@member due to this thing about Google blacklisting companies our security teams has blocked the ping and trace to Google internally and we are looking for something to resolve this

maybe investigate: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 (OpenDNS) 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare)

or your ISP?

We have a meeting with cloudflare tomorrow

We should be able to disable the 8.8.8.8 built in ping, which I don’t think is possible

I don’t want to disable it as we all agree that it’s an awesome function and it works

But I just want to know what will Google do if from one IP or ISP 10 000 devices does a ping

Yeah, but the fact that your security team needs to block it because our checkbox is grayed out is not the way. Maybe it’s a great feature, but not the best UX that it can’t be switched off
