A user asked about deploying the EdgeDX agent to virtual desktops. Others confirmed that it is possible and shared tips for installation, including adding extra settings and checking licensing. The agent can also be installed on non-persistent machines. The licensing system for EdgeDX is per device, and current usage can be seen on the overview dashboard or in the maintenance section of the EdgeDX configuration settings. Links to helpful resources from ControlUp were also shared.

In our environment we’ve always separated our management having only our laptops in EdgeDX and Citrix Virtual Desktops in only the VDI module. I was thinking about deploying the EdgeDX agent to our virtual desktops to have everything in there to take advantage of those tools for all devices. is that common place or not how its meant to work? and also are there licensing/#of device concerns we need to look at before we’d do that?
Hi,
Yes it is possible. There is a way to install to the agent on non persistent machines. Top of my head you also need to add some extra settings into the tenant to allow for this.
Cloning a Windows image – If you are deploying the Agent Manager by cloning a Windows image, follow the command line installation instructions. Note that you must add the ONLYSTARTONBOOT=1 parameter to the command if you are installing the Agent Manager onto a device that will be cloned
I do this for our AVD deployment below is the install I use in our image deployment
Start-Process msiexec -ArgumentList "/i "$installerFullPath" DEVREGCODE=%YourCodeHere% TENANT=%YourSiteHere%.sip.controlup.com ONLYSTARTONBOOT=1 ALLUSERS=1 REGISTERWITHNAME=1 /qn" -Wait

thank you! i should have mentioned we are 100% persistent vms too
my main concern is licensing since it would add quite a few more devices into Edge
oh, then it’s super easy not really any different from physical machines
I’d still suggest doing the register with name setting if you do things like reimage machines and reassign the same one back to a user
awesome thanks! i can reach out to our account manager about the licensing stuff too but thought i’d check here if anyone knew how that worked w/ Edge
edge indeed is licensed per device, bit different from RT.
thanks! how can we see what our current count is and what we are allowed?
On the overview dashboard you should see how many licenses you have available in edgeDX, you can also look in the maintenance section under Configuration > Settings
perfect thank you for everyones help!
