A user asked about sizing for Insights storage – in the KB, an example of 1,000 RDSH, 500 VDI and 30 Server OS users was given as 3 TB per year with an overhead of 1.3. 8,000 Citrix users, 2,000 VDIs, 3,000 laptops and 1,000 servers will require around 48 TB of storage, which would need an IOP cluster with 3 data nodes. The article from ControlUp KB is no longer available, however ControlUp’s Knowledge Base article on prerequisites for Insights on-premises can be found at https://support.controlup.com/v1/docs/insights-on-premises-prerequisites#recommended-installation-types-based-on-sessions.

is there a sizing guide to how much storage space you need for inights/
There was one in the KB but Iam unable to find it on my mobile atm.
I have one in German lang. If you can wait until Tuesday I can translate it 🙂
It was something like 3 MB/RDSH-User/Day; 6 MB/VDI-User/Day and 8 MB/ServerOS(Fileserver,DomainController,etc)/Day.
The formula CU provided includes also an unspecified „overhead“ of 1,3.
So as an example of 1k RDSH User, 500 VDI and 30 infrastructure servers you will have:
((10003)+(5006)+(308)) 365 days * 1,3 = ~ 3 TB per yeari can wait until y=tuesday 🙂 thanks
8k Citrix users. 2k VDIs 3k latops and about 1k serversmy maths sometimes lets me down but wold that be 48 TB per year? approxFor that size you need an iop cluster and I would start with 3 data nodes each 500GB.we have done some improvements over the years to make them consume less data. General purpose os would consume the least data btw as by far the most data is coming from processes and thus user sessions.
Sorry for being late 🙂
I just double checked what I wrote and I can confirm that the numbers I provided above are valid. BUT the article from ControlUp KB is gone.
The article was from back in the days where no splunk HA was possible.
As Wouter mentioned you will go with mulitple data nodes but the amount of storage will be the same (divided by number of data nodes ofc) 🙂
Another question is if you really want to have 365 days of data…
You can manipulate the index sizes and I recommend to do so in an advanced setup/architecture. Not sure what ControlUp says abt this but I had some success reducing the indexes in the past.
Regarding sizing I am sure you are aware of the knowledge base article:
