The ability to download and write scripts adds infinite expandability to the ControlUp solution without people needing to know how to read, write or run PowerShell. It is so immensely powerful that as we dive into how to integrate scripts into the ControlUp Community, we all learn more as we do it.
We have recently added the new #controlup_scripts-beta channel, where Guy Leech will share beta scripts he and the scripting team is working on for your feedback and help in testing. This is an excellent way for you to help shape the future of ControlUp while staying up to date on the latest coming soon.
We also have the #community-scripts channel. The goal for this channel was for members to share their scripts with others and get feedback and help on them.
This opens a couple of questions:
- Where does someone post a question about an existing script already in the library? It would not belong in the #controlup_scripts-beta channel as it is for the beta scripts Guy and others will share, and it is not a community script, so it would not belong in the #community-scripts channel.
- Where does someone post an idea for a new script and others’ feedback on that? We noticed that this doesn’t fit into what we initially proposed, and we definitely want ideas for scripts that can help you. Although we’re not making any promises in terms of development of them, but please don’t let us stop you – there is a channel for showing off your home-grown community scripts after all!
That said, I’m NOT a fan of too many channels, but the ability to extend the ControlUp solution is so powerful and important that we want to do this the best way and provide you with the best solution. Hence, we will change things up one more time, hopefully, and create what we hope is the perfect structure.
Moving forward, we will have four channels dedicated to scripting.
- #scripts-community-created – for you to share your scripts and get feedback on them.
- #scripts-controlup-production – to ask questions and leave feedback on ControlUp-created live and downloadable scripts from the ControlUp Script Library.
- #scripts-controlup-beta – scripts the ControlUp team is working on but not yet released and live, but the scripts we want your help with feedback and additional testing.
- #scripts-community-ideas – for you to share your ideas for what scripts are missing
We hope this new structure helps make it easier to organize all the different types of scripts, allows you to share your fantastic work, and get feedback and support with them while creating a place to discuss and share what is live online and what is in beta.
Most Importantly, we will ensure the posts created in each channel are in the correct channel. If required, we will ask you politely to move your question or comment to the proper channel. We hope you understand. It is best to make things as clean as possible for everyone.
Lastly, I hope this is not too many channels, though the power of ControlUp scripts to extend your investment in ControlUp is so robust that we feel it is the best way forward for everyone.
