Users have reported an issue when using RDP/ControlUpconsole.exe, where clicking within an RDP session causes random background apps to pop to the foreground. It was suggested this was a known issue unrelated to ControlUp/RDM/Citrix, linked to the RDP stack, and ControlUp are unable to do anything about it. A workaround is to open the RDP session in a new window. ControlUp are also working on a modern Remote Control solution, but this will only be available with the Solve product, which the user doesn’t have access to for another 3 years.

Hi team. I’ve noticed this with the real time (fat) client/controlupconsole.exe that when i’m in the Remote Desktop view and RDP’d to a VDA or other VM, when i single mouse click or double click within the RDP window, a random backgroup app like Edge will popup over my CU window and the click gets passed through to this app. it’s kinda scary to think i could inadvertently click something i did not want clicked. I have seen this with 8.7, the 8.8 version that was released around a few weeks ago and now the very latest 8.8. Anyone seen this behavior? it’s being ran from a standalone 2016 RDS session host.
Can you send a screenshot so we can better understand this issue?
There’s really nothing to screenshot. You click within an rdp session and another running background app moves to the forefront and you have to minimize it to get back to the CU console. This doesn’t happen in any other CU tab besides Remote Desktop
Are you able to reproduce this Matt? I’ve had this but assumed it was a Zoom thing
It’s very often,, yes
Hi @member, just to verify (and see if we can reproduce this internally):
-
you connect to a Server 2016 VM via RDP
-
You launch the console
-
You go to the Remote Desktop tab
-
You connect via RDP to a VM / VDA
-
You do a single mouse click / double click, and then, sometimes, a random app “pops” to the foreground
Is this fairly accurate?
I have also seen this for several versions now and when I was talking to @member about it I believe he said this was a known issue unrelated to CU. This was quite some time ago so I’m going based on what I think I remember about the conversation.
This post, although long winded, explains the issue experienced from RDM as well.Devolutions Forum
thx a lot @member. I guess this issue is related to the RDP stack, rather than ControlUp, RDM or Citrix. we will see if we can do something about this
@member – I reported this issue to ControlUp years ago and was told that there was nothing that could be done. We use ControlUp as a Citrix published app and use RDP sparingly from ControlUp because of this very issue. Which is unfortunate really.
Not sure we can do something with that.. as the root cause is NOT ControlUp. Having said that, we are working on a modern Remote Control solution, that will replace the RDP pane, and will be available via Solve

While not a fix. In my experience you can avoid this by opening the RDP session in a new window.
Thanks @member except we don’t have Solve and won’t for at least another 3 years (current license expires 2026) unless it gets rolled into our current license
Hi
👏
@member Let me know If you need anymore information on our plans with the Remote Control feature that Yoni mentioned.
@member – Looks like you removed your comment about Solve being widely available for customers soon. I reached out to our Customer success person and they mentioned it’s still being sold. We fired up the trial thinking it would become permanent but it seems that may not be the case anymore…?
Hi @member, sorry for the confusion, seems like this is slightly more complicated than I thought, and the Solve license / availability is dependent on the customer status, license tier, license age etc… Your CSM / Account Executive will have the best answers for you
This happens to me all the time across versions as far back I can remember, including 8.8. You go to click on something in the CU console and it essentially instantly goes to the background. I am also on a Server 2016 RDP jumpbox running the console. I have to blink and think “what happened” and bring the CU console back to focus.
It’s a little scary… I’ve inadvertently clicked something in a background app that didn’t need to be clicked on
